Discrepancies in the New Testament

DISCREPANCIES IN THE NEW TESTAMENT
SAME SUBJECT BUT DIFFERENT EXPRESSIONS

·     Beginning of the duty of Jesus.

“Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God…” [1]
“...John, of course, had not yet been thrown into prison.”[2]

·     Name of the father of the husband of Mary

Jacob
“… Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born …” [3]
Heli
“Jesus was about thirty years old when he began his work. He was the son (as was thought) of Joseph son of Heli” [4]

·     Is Shelah son or grandson of Arphaxad?

“Son of Serug, son of Reu, son of Peleg, son of Eber, son of Shelah, son of Cainan, son of Arphaxad, son of Shem…” [5]
Son
“The descendants of Shem: Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud, and Aram … Arpachshad became the father of Shelah; and Shelah became the father of Eber. To Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg.”[6]

·     Is Jesus’ testimony about himself true or not?

It is not true
“I seek to do not my own will but the will of him who sent me. If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true.” [7]
It is valid
“Then the Pharisees said to him, ‘You are testifying on your own behalf; your testimony is not valid.’ Jesus answered, ‘Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid …”[8]

·     Is John Elijah or not?

Jesus says John is actually Elijah
“And the disciples asked him, ‘Why, then, do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?’ He replied, ‘Elijah is indeed coming and will restore all things; but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but they did to him whatever they pleased. … Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them about John the Baptist.”[9]

He says he is not Elijah.
“John confessed, ‘I am not the Messiah’ … And they asked him, ‘What then? Are you Elijah?’ He said, ‘I am not.’ ‘Are you the prophet?’ He answered, ‘No.’”[10]

·     Jesus says both “Tell your friends” and “No one should know this.”

“Tell your friends”
“As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed by demons begged him that he might be with him. But Jesus refused, and said to him, ‘Go home to your friends, and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and what mercy he has shown you.’ And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed.”[11]

“No one should know this.”
“He took her by the hand and said to her, ‘Talitha cum’, which means, ‘little girl, get up!’ And immediately the girl got up and began to walk about (she was twelve years of age). At this they were overcome with amazement. He strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.”[12]

“A blind beggar”
“They came to Jericho. As he and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, ‘Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”[14]

·     What do apostles take with them?

They won’t take anything: no bag, no tunic, no sandals, no staff
“No bag for your journey, or two tunics, or sandals, or a staff.”[17]
They can take a staff and wear sandals
“He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics.”[18]

·     Jesus wore nice smell

Two days before the festivals… on his head
“It was two days before the Passover and the festival of Unleavened Bread. While he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at the table, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment of nard, and she broke open the jar and poured the ointment on his head...”[19]

Six days before the Passover … to his feet
“Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany … Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped them with her hair.…”[20]

·     What was paid in return for the betrayal of Jesus

“They paid him thirty pieces of silver”
“Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, ‘What will you give me if I betray him to you?’ They paid him thirty pieces of silver...”[21]

“They promised to give him money”
“Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them. When they heard it, they were greatly pleased, and promised to give him money...”[22]

·     Who carried the cross on which Jesus was crucified?

“They compelled this man to carry his cross”
“As they went out, they came upon a man from Cyrene named Simon; they compelled this man to carry his cross.”[23]

“Carrying the cross by himself”
“So they took Jesus; and carrying the cross by himself, he went out to what is called The Place of the Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha.”[24]

·     Where was Jesus buried after the crucifixion?

In Galilee
“Then go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has been raised from the dead, and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him.’ … Then Jesus said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.’ … Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee[25], to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshipped him….”[26]

In Emmaus
“Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus[27], about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened.… While they were talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’… ‘Look at my hands and my feet; see that it is I myself.’”[28]

·        Has anyone ascended into heaven besides Jesus?

“No one has ascended into heaven”
“No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man”[29]

“Elijah ascended into heaven”
“As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them, and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven.”[30]

·     Views of Jesus and Paul

Paul
“For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation.”[31] … “I do not nullify the grace of God; for if justification comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing.”[32]

Jesus
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfil.”[33]

·        Attitudes of Paul and Jacob in terms of justification by faith

A person is justified by faith”
“For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law.”[34] “We say, ‘Faith was reckoned to Abraham as righteousness”[35]

“Human is justified by works”
“…if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you?”[36] “Was not our ancestor Abraham justified by works when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?”[37]

[1] Mark: 1 / 14
[2] John: 3 /24
[3] Matthew: 1 /16
[4] Luke: 3 /23
P.S. Jacob is the husband of Mary but not the father of Jesus. Thus, the pedigree should have been startef with Mary.
[5] Luke: 3 / 35 – 36
[6] Genesis: 10 / 22 - 25, 11 / 12
P.S. Christians try to overcome the dilemma about Shelah by saying “It is not a rare situation where generations or individuals do not take place in the generation tree in order to engrave the pedigree or to fulfil a theological purpose.” … If our criticisms reflect our ignorance of the font style and applications of those times, we shouldn’t hurry about finding discrepancies in The Bible.
