ACCORDING TO
THE STANDARDS OF QUR’AN
OLD AND NEW TESTAMENT
EXAMPLES OF SENTENCES WHICH
INCLUDE VIOLENCE
AND HORROR
·
Every place on which you
set foot shall be yours
“Then the Lord will drive
out all these nations before you, and you will dispossess nations larger and
mightier than yourselves. Every place on which you set foot shall be yours;
your territory shall extend from the wilderness to the Lebanon and from the River,
the river Euphrates, to the Western Sea. No one will be able to stand against
you; the Lord your God will put the fear and dread of you on all the land on
which you set foot ...”[1]
·
Kill everyone who breaths
“When the Lord your God
gives it into your hand, you shall put all its males to the sword. You may,
however, take as your booty the women, the children, livestock, and everything
else in the town, all its spoil. You may enjoy the spoil of your enemies, which
the Lord your God has given you. Thus you shall treat all the towns that are
very far from you, which are not towns of the nations here. But as for the
towns of these peoples that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance,
you must not let anything that breathes remain alive. You shall annihilate
them—the Hittites and the Amorites, the Canaanites and the Perizzites, the
Hivites and the Jebusites—just as the Lord your God has commanded.”[2]
·
Baby with a pacifier and
white-haired man
“I will heap disasters upon
them … The teeth of beasts I will send against them, with venom of things
crawling in the dust. In the street the sword shall bereave, and in the
chambers terror, for young man and woman alike, nursing child and old grey
head.” [3]
·
I will make my arrows drunk
with blood
“I will make my arrows
drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh—with the blood of the
slain and the captives, from the long-haired enemy.”[4]
·
It does not lie down until
it has drunk the blood of the slain
“Look, a people rising up
like a lioness, and rousing itself like a lion! It does not lie down until
it has eaten the prey and drunk the blood of the slain.”[5]
·
Men and women twelve
thousand people
“Then the Lord said to Joshua, ‘Stretch out
the sword that is in your hand towards Ai; for I will give it into your hand.’
… They entered the city, took it, and at once set the city on fire... the men
of Ai had no power to flee this way or that … When Israel had finished
slaughtering all the inhabitants of Ai in the open wilderness where they
pursued them, and when all of them to the very last had fallen by the edge of
the sword … The total of those who fell that day, both men and women, was
twelve thousand—all the people of Ai … And he hanged the king of Ai on a tree
until evening; and at sunset Joshua commanded, and they took his body down from
the tree …”[6]
·
She shattered and pierced
his temple
“Most blessed of women be
Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite …He [Sisera] asked water, she [Yael] gave him milk. She brought
him curds in a lordly bowl. She put her hand to the tent-peg and her right
hand to the workmen’s mallet; she struck Sisera a blow, she crushed his
head, she shattered and pierced his temple. [7] He sank, he fell, he lay still at her
feet; at her feet he sank, he fell; where he sank, there he fell dead.”[8]
·
They put everyone to the
swords.
“Meanwhile, the Israelites
turned back against the Benjaminites, and put them to the sword—the city, the
people, the animals, and all that remained. Also the remaining towns they set
on fire.”[9]
·
Put women and children to
the sword.
“So the congregation sent
twelve thousand soldiers there and commanded them, ‘Go, put the inhabitants of
Jabesh-gilead to the sword, including the women and the little ones.”[10]
·
God says: Go!
“Thus says the Lord: ‘…Now go
and attack Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have; do not spare them,
but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and
donkey.’”[11]
·
He thrust the sword into
his belly.
“Ehud came to him, while he
was sitting alone in his cool roof-chamber, and said, ‘I have a message from
God for you.’… Then Ehud reached with his left hand, took the sword from his
right thigh, and thrust it into Eglon’s belly; the hilt also went in after the
blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for he did not draw the sword out of
his belly; and the dirt came out. Then Ehud went out into the vestibule, and
closed the doors of the roof-chamber on him, and locked them.”[12]
·
Break them with a rod of
iron.
“Ask of me, and I will make
the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. You
shall break them with a rod of iron, and dash them in pieces like a
potter’s vessel.” [13]
·
Their infants will be
dashed to pieces before their eyes
“Therefore I will make the heavens
tremble, and the earth will be shaken out of its place at the wrath of the
Lord of hosts on the day of his fierce anger.… all will turn to their own
people, and all will flee to their own lands. Whoever is found will
be thrust through, and whoever is caught will fall by the sword. Their
infants will be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses will
be plundered, and their wives ravished.”[14]
·
Your eye shall not spare,
and you shall show no pity.
“To the others he said in
my hearing, ‘Pass through the city after him, and kill; your eye shall not
spare, and you shall show no pity. Cut down old men, young men and young women,
little children and women...”[15]

P.S. People who believe in The Bible (especially Christians) claim that
such expressions take place in Qur’an as well. It is impossible to find any
expression like “show no pity”, “kill young and old alike” etc. Muslims are
permitted to fight provided that “they are being attacked” and “they are
persecuted”. (Look: Baqarah (2): 190 – 193, Haj (22): 39 – 40)
The ayah which is driven forward by Christians is one of the ayahs of Tawbah in Qur’an: “kill the polytheists
wherever you find them”. This is the only ayah that doesn’t begin with
“basmala” as it is a “declaration of disassociation with polytheists.” The
summary of this surah is as follows: “[This is a declaration of] disassociation, from
Allah and His Messenger, to those with whom you had made a treaty among the
polytheists. … And [it is] an
announcement from Allah and His Messenger to the people on the day of the
greater pilgrimage that Allah is disassociated from the disbelievers, and [so
is] His Messenger. … Excepted are those with
whom you made a treaty among the polytheists and then they have not been
deficient toward you in anything or supported anyone against you. …. And when the sacred
months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and
capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of
ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, let them
[go] on their way. … And if any one of the
polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may
hear the words of Allah… How [can there be a
treaty] while, if they gain dominance over you, they do not observe concerning
you any pact of kinship or covenant of protection? … But if they repent,
establish prayer, and give zakah, then they are your brothers in religion … And if they break their
oaths after their treaty and defame your religion, then fight the leaders of
disbelief …” Tawbah (9): 1 – 17 (abridged) As it is
clearly seen these ayahs and the others permitting war are commands and advices
giving information during self-defence.
